Anticipating Jesus

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
John 1v1

The opening chapter of John's gospel builds up a sense of anticipation for the rest of the book. What kind of man will this be?

A man who created everything. (v3)
A man who gives people the right to be children of God. (v12)
A man who is full to overflowing with grace and truth. (v14, 16-17)
A man who has seen God, and makes God known. (v1, v18)

John the Baptist says that he is making the way for the LORD; for Yahweh, the God of Israel (v23). He points to Jesus, saying: "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (v29). He will baptise [immerse] with the Holy Spirit (v33).

John and Nathaneal both declare that he is the Son of God. (v34, 49).
He is the King of Israel. (v49)
He is some kind of glorious gateway into heaven. (v51)

The first chapter of John sets the backdrop to an incredible ministry culminating in the cross, resurrection, ascention and Pentecost.

I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of John!
