I've been reading John recently, and I was really struck by John 10...
...Jesus tells us that he knows each of his people [sheep] by name. And that they each recognise his call and joyfully follow after him.
He tells us he is the way and the means of salvation; that he blesses his people with perfect rest in green pastures. He explains that his express purpose is to give his people Life; that abundant life that nobody else can give.
He illuminates his death and resurrection - He would choose to die for the people who belong to him, because of his genuine care for them. He would give up his life on his terms and took it back up on his authority, in obedience to God the Father.
And now he is bringing people of every background and nation together, making a people of all who truly belong to him.
(I suggest reading the lyrics, not actually watching the video...)
A thousand times I've failed Still Your mercy remains And should I stumble again I'm caught in Your grace Everlasting Your light will shine when all else fades Never ending Your glory goes beyond all fame
Your will above all else My purpose remains The art of losing myself In bringing You praise Everlasting Your light will shine when all else fades Never ending Your glory goes beyond all fame
In my heart and my soul Lord I give You control Consume me from the inside out Lord let justice and praise Become my embrace To love You from the inside out
So often we try and rely upon ourselves and our efforts to grow in holiness and to defeat the devil's attacks. We think that if we just try hard enough and if we work at defeating sin then we'll be able to change. But the Bible says otherwise.
It tells us that we need to have our minds filled with light; with the truth of the glory of our saviour [1]. We need to fasten all other armour in place with Truth [2]. We need to flood our minds and hearts with reality as revealed by God our Father. We need to know reality, so that the devil's lies sound like the hollow half-truths they really are.
So next time that you are tempted to try harder, instead spend time in God's word. If sin is biting at your heels, immerse yourself in Truth. See the beauty of our saviour once again and the love of our God. When the devil tells you that sin is worth it, go back and fill your heart with all the promises of God. He wants to give an eternity feasting in his kingdom, he wants to fill your life with his presence and joy [3]. Don't let the devil tell you otherwise.
[1] And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:18)
[2] Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth. (Ephesians 6:4)
It blows my mind that God is so passionate about his people, that he stepped out of eternity into hot and dusty 1st Century occupied Israel, to live as a human being alongside the people he made and then to die on a wooden cross between two criminals, so that we can be adopted into his family.
I have a restored relationship with God that I don't deserve because of that moment in history. Not only that, but he also beat death, and rose triumphant from a cold stone tomb, so that I too can live forever with him!
And also, a relationship with him is both exciting and challenging. There is no other life worth living. Any other life is a waste.
I blog both to challenge or encourage myself with what it appears God's been saying to me, and also in the hope that now and again people will stumble across it and be equally challenged/encouraged.
